You Are Not Lacking Confidence. You May Be Practicing an Identity That Doesn’t Require It
Share
Sometimes you don’t need another confidence quote. You need to look at the role you’ve gotten used to playing.
Maybe you’re the agreeable one who never makes the first suggestion. The reliable one who supports everyone else’s goals before touching her own. The thoughtful one who prepares endlessly but rarely lets herself be seen trying.
Those identities can have real strengths. They may also come with habits that keep you from practicing the very confidence you want.
This isn’t an accusation, and it doesn’t ignore the situations where speaking up carries genuine costs. You can respect your circumstances while still asking where you have room to choose differently.
What if confidence isn’t a trait you have to acquire before you participate? What if part of building it is becoming someone who occasionally takes up space, asks directly, tries publicly, or expresses a preference?
Your self-concept can catch up to what you repeatedly allow yourself to do.
One small shift to try
Notice one role you automatically slip into. In one low-stakes situation, choose a slightly more visible or self-directed response.
